Answer #1
  • Inside cell or within the intracellular fluid, electrons are shuttled within different carrier molecules or electro transporters.
  • If these electron carriers come in vicinity or contact to oxygen, electrons may be transferred to oxygen molecule, making reactive oxygen.
  • Oxygen may be converted to dangerous substances like superoxide, hydrogen peroxides, which are toxic to the cells or organelles.
  • Also, hydrogen peroxides may be converted by free iron ions in intracellular fluids, to hydroxyl radicals that can damage and mutate DNA.
  • Catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes act as protective factors against oxidative damages, and thus is indispensable in aerobic organisms, cells and organelles with oxygen abundancies, like peroxisomes, mitochondria.
  • Obligate anaerobes like genus of Clostridium, lack these enzymes and cannot survive in oxygenic condition.
  • However certain strains of Clostridium are considered aerotolerant.
  • Butyric acid strains of Clostridium like Clostridium butyricum can survive in presence of oxygen, as well as absorb oxygen.
  • These bacteria can absorb oxygen in its lag phase or prior to developmental phase.
  • Oxygen consumption by these bacteria, are also observed post addition of NADPH/ NADH, due to presence of NAD(P) oxidases.

    2) Buster Sod operates a 1200-acre irrigated farm in the Red River Valley of Arizona. Sod's principal activities are raising wheat, alfalfa, and beef. The Red Valley Water Authority has just given its water allotments for next year (Sod was allotted 2000 acre-feet) and Sod is busy preparing his production plan for the next year. It figures that beef prices will hold at around $600 per ton and wheat will sell at $1.60 per bushel. Best guesses are that it...

Why Pythagoras wouldn’t eat Falafel: A story about Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency Fava beans, an ingredient of falafel, have been an important food source in the Mediterranean and Middle East since antiquity. The Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras prohibited his followers from dining on fava beans, perhaps because they made many people sick with a, sometimes fatal, condition called favism. In favism, erythrocytes begin to lyse 24-48hrs after ingestion of the beans, releasing free haemoglobin into the blood. Jaundice and...
