The modern periodic table is arranged the way it is because of quantum mechanics. That is, there are sections for each subshell, and the number of columns in each section are dictated by the number of electrons allowed in each subshell.

Look at the number of columns that are present in each section of the periodic table: the s block has 2 columns for 2 electrons, the p block is 6 cloumns wide because the p subshell holds 6 electrons, etc.

Look now at the rows of the periodic table: the first shell as you know only contains an s subshell, and so the row only has s-block elements present; the second shell has s and p subshells, and so the second row has elements present from the s and p blocks. The d subshells are odd, since the d block should appear in row 3 but because of the (n-1) rule it doesn't appear until row 4. Same goes for f subshells and the (n-2) rule for them.

Imagine that you have traveled to an alternate dimension where the laws of quantum mechanics are different. The elements have the same symbols and even the same number of protons, neutrons, and electrons, but their arrangement on the Bizarro Periodic Table will differ greatly from our own. They use the same letters to designate the subshells (s,p,d, and f) even though their shapes and number of orbitals differ. The (n-1) and (n-2) rules apply here as well.

Consider these rules for the quantum numbers in Bizarro World.

n can be any whole number from 1 to infinity (the same as our world)

l can be integer values from 0 to n-1 (the same as our world)

ml can be integer values from 0 to l

ms can be +1/2 or 0 or -1/2

Answer the following question:

2. Based on this information, please draw what the Bizarro Periodic Table might look like. a) Draw the first 7 rows and include the s, p, d, and f subshell areas (include the f block between the s and d blocks, not separated. b) Remember that the (n-1) rule for the d subshells and the (n-2) rule for the f subshells still apply. c) You don't have to list the atomic numbers or masses in each box, just the element symbols will be fine. d) As a hint: your first Bizarro Noble Gases (in place of He) should be Li, then Mg (in place of Ne), and your last one will be Ts.
