There's not much big difference between shell program and regular program except for the fact that in regular program you are using the actual processor to do something but in shell scripting you command the utilities provided by the operating system which in turn use processor to perform certain functions.Shell is more of a communication between you and the operating system While regular program is communication directly with the processor.

Each line in a shell program contains a single UNIX command,Shell programs are interpreted and not compiled programs,
