Perceptual vigilance can be defined as the activity or process which is used by a person to notice and address the stimuli which can be quite vital for him to some extent. Or in other words, these are the stimuli that are noticed by the individuals which are important for them for instance advertisements.

On the other hand, the term perceptual defense indicates about the process or activity which is used by the individuals to develop some sort of resistance to screen out the various stimuli which can be unpleasant or threatening to them. For instance, an advertisement of lung cancer form the smoking can be ignored by the chain smoker.
