Question 214 pts

The soils of temperate deciduous forests rank among the most fertile in the world; their fertility is related to _____.

Group of answer choices

a continuous canopy during the growing season which reduces nutrient extraction by grasses and shrubs

all of the choices

moderate levels of rainfall which leave most of nutrients within the soil rather than leaching them out

average temperature ranges which promote rapid leaf decomposition and humus formation

the large amount of leaf drop, which quickly recycles back into the topsoil

Answer #1

Question No 1

Biomes are very large ecological areas and their distribution affected by local factors including, climate, altitude and soil type.

From the equator towards the north, the biomes present are:

  1. Tropical forest (23.5° north – 23.5° south of the equator)
  2. Deserts (15-30° north and south of the equator)
  3. Temperate forest (40-60° north and south of the equator)
  4. Taiga ( High latitudes, 60° north of the equator and on mountains)
  5. Tundra (Far north, above 60°N in Northern Europe, Alaska, and Russia)

Question 2

Temperate deciduous forests are located in the mid-latitude areas which means that they are found between the polar regions and the tropics. The areas in which deciduous forests are located get about 750 to 1,500 mm of precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year. Temperate deciduous forest has the most fertile soil and 6 months growing season. thew factor responsible for the fertile soil includes the following factors.

  • Decomposition of fallen leaves, decaying logs, and dead organisms
  • Earthworms, millipedes and other soil animals assist with decomposition, which adds nutrients to the soil.
  • Less leaching of nutrients from the soil due to moderate rainfall.
  • Less grass during the growing season due to large canopy of the trees, resulting in decreased nutrient extraction from the soil.

Answer: All the above reasons

Question #3

Geneflow among the population is the transfer of genetic variation from one population to another.

It is affected by many factors:

  • Poaching - Indiscriminate killing of the animal reduces the number of individuals in the species thereby reducing the heterogenicity. It can lead to inbreeding and lead to homogeneity in the species.
  • Habitat fragmentation: I could pool a group of individuals in a geographic location and prevent cross-breeding leading to homogenization.
  • Species introduction: This could lead to cross-breeding and hence increase the gene pool and lead to the heterogeneous gene pool.

Answer : All the above
