A geneticist is trying to determine how many genes are found ina 300,000-bp region of DNA. Analysis shows that four H3Kme3 modifications are found in this peice of DNA. WHat might their presence suggest about the number of genes located there?

Answer #1

H3Kme3 or the tri-methylation of the 4th Lysine residue of the Histone H3 is an epigenetic mark associated with the start sites of genes that are highly transcriptionally active. This is because H3Kme3 modifications are known to recruit certain chromatin remodelors, which open chromatin for transcription.

The presence of 4 such modifications in a 300,000 bp stretch of DNA suggest that there are 4 genes present in that piece of DNA.
