An experiment on the growth rate of certain organisms requires the establishment of an environment of humid air enriched in oxygen. This environment is created by feeding streams A, B, and C into a chamber. A: Liquid water, fed at a rate of 20.0 cm3 /min. B: Air (21 mole % O2, 79 mole% N2). C: Pure oxygen (O2), with a molar flow rate one fifth of the molar flow rate of stream B. The output gas is analyzed and is found to contain 1.5 mole% water. Draw and label a flowchart of the process, and calculate the flowrates of stream B and C, and the water-free composition of the output.

Fresh air containing 5.00 mole % water vapor is to be cooled and dehumidified to a water content of 2.13 mole % H2O. A stream of fresh air is combined with a recycle stream of previously dehumidified air and pass through the cooler. The blended stream entering the unit contains 2.88 mole % H2O. In the air conditioner, same of the water in the feed stream is condensed and removed as liquid. A fraction of the dehumidified air leaving the...

Terephthalic acid (TPA) is synthesized from -xylene (PX) in the process C8H10 +302 – C8H6O4 +2H2O shown below. A fresh feed of pure liquid PX combines with a recycle stream containing PX and a solution (S) of a catalyst (a cobalt salt) in a solvent (methanol). The combined stream, which contains S and PX in a 3:1 mass ratio, is fed to a reactor in which 90% of the PX is converted to TPA. A stream of air at 25...

You are in charge of a combustion furnace. The furnace is fed an air stream and a methane stream which is combusted to produce heat that is used to boil water and produce steam for your plant. The combustion of fuels using an air stream which contains nitrogen generally produces significant amounts of NO, compounds which are an air pollutant, so the exhaust gases must generally be removed through various processes. In this case, your furnace exhaust is passed through...

. (5pt) Ethylene oxide is produced by the catalytic oxidation of cthylenc C3H4 + O2 → C2H40 An undesired competing reaction is the combustion of ethylene CO2 + H2O C2H4 + O2 The feed to the reactor contains 4 moles of ethylene per mole of oxygen, while the oxygen contains 0.4% inerts. The single pass conversion of ethylene is 15% and for every 100 moles of ethylene consumed in the reactor, 80 moles of ethylene oxide emerges in the reactor...
