When a channel section or any angle section (tension member) is connected to any other member (gusset plate) by means of bolting or welding so that only few legs are connected then the external force is resisted only by connected legs not by outstanding legs . This gives rise to the non uniform stress distribution adjacent to connection . This is called shear lag.

To account for this shear lag, a factor has been introduced known as shear lag factor.
