Explain how homeostasis of body temperature is maintained when a person is outside on a cold, winter day by:

  1. Describing the stimulus that initiates (triggers/starts) the homeostatic mechanism for body temperature control
  2. Identifying the three major components of the homeostatic mechanism and specifying the name of these three structures in the body that represent each of these 3 components.
  3. Describing exactly how those structures involved help bring the body back into homeostasis (hint: focus should be on the actual structures that act directly to bring the body back into homeostasis and notice that I ask for structureS)

Answer #1

Skin, largest organ of the body, acts as a barrier between the internal and external environment thus allowing us to maintain homeostasis. It is the largest sensory organs of the body and senses different noises or differences taking place in the external environment and triggers defence responses. It is stated in some recent papers that temperature of skin is the body's temperature and the thermo cutaneous signals give feedback thereby maintaining thermoregulation.
The three main mechanisms of homeostasis are: blood pressure, body fluid, body temperature, blood sugar and gas concentration. Homeostasis is maintained by the entire body including nervous system, exocrine gland, endocrine gland and many others. When body temperature falls due to the extremecold outside, vaso contaction of skin and lymph blood vessels help to maintain the temperature. The blood flow near the skin increases thereby increasing the temperature of the body. The skin triggers shivering so that the skin and vessels contract and keep you as warm as possible.

At other times, the merger is unpredictable, like when your business faces an unexpected auto accident, product recall, or government regulation change.
