The duodenal ampulla, also known as duodenal cap, is the first part of the duodenum which lies within the jejunum and the stomach. It helps to maintain the flow and motility of the stomach. The duodenal ampulla has connections with gallbladder, liver, bile duct, portal vein, head of pancreas, inferior vena cava and greater omentum. If the flow through duodenal ampulla is blocked for some reason, then the bile and pancreatic juice would not be released into the lumen of small intestine.
