Integrity vs despair is the last and final stage of Erickson's theory of psychological development. This stage starts at an adult age, when people retire from a regular job or activity. To be specific this stage begins at the age of 65 years and runs till death. Unlike other theorists Erickson focuses on the entire lifespan of an individual. In this stage individuals focus more on tackling mortality issues.
This stage is a kind of reflection of of the life individuals live previously with a sense of fulfillment, that provides integrity. On the other hand, a sense of despair over a life which is spent wrongly without any sense of contentment, the result if which is despair.
There are numerous things that will compel an individual to experience rather than integrity, like many wrong decisions been taken, had no enough time to rectify those decisions, not been able to make productive use of resources. These can develop a sense of despair and can put a person into a distressful life ahead.
