Answer #1

It is possible to produce aspirin using salicylic acid and acetic acid . Take acetic acid and salicylic acid and sodium acetate . Heat it for a while ( say one and half hour ) and then pour the reaction mixture in ice-water to get solid aspirin. The phenol group in salicylic acid froms an ester with carboxylic part of acetic acid . The excess water and presence of an acid catalyst , the reaction will proceed in reverse direction . That is hydrolysis of ester . This makes this reaction slow and low yielding.

If you use acid anhydride that reaction is fast and higher yielding because acid anhydride is more reactive than carboxylic acid.
