Answer

During S phase of interphase DNA synthesis occur all 46 chromosomes is duplicated by the cell. After the S phase,it enters into G2 phase here cell is prepared for cell division. There is G2 checkpoint where it undergoes checking for DNA damage,DNA replication complete or not thus making any needed repairs. So that is why cell non able to function normally when it passes S phase of interphase.Cell has to be checked before entering into mitosis.

In Prophase of mitosis chromatin condenses into chromosomes. In this phase nuclear envelope disappears.Centriol begins to move opposite poles of the cell.
