The Disney company is notorious coming up with different ways to save money on things that cost them as an organization, or ways in which they can get you to part with your hard earned money, or a combination of both. While watching the video, my mind drifted to the last time my family visited Disney in Orlando, I can clearly recall saying to my wife, " Disney not only charged us to enter the park to ride the rides but also to shop in their stores and eat in their restaurants, they've got it figured out."

So it should be very little surprise that they have implemented the idea of saving the table scraps from their food concepts and also the solid waste from water treatment facilities in order to create energy. Energy costs to the Disney corporation are a major concern because of the amount of money that is actually spent on them. Should they be able to capitalize on this bi product and use technology to help reduce energy cost it would be a tremendous win for the Disney company. Disney is a huge multinational company that employees hundreds of thousands of employees, any reduction in cost is a big win. So, to take the idea of saving on energy cost a step further, imagine applying the table scrap and solid waste practices to the population of China and India? It is estimated that 35 to 37% of the worlds population resides in one of those two countries, that is a lot of food scraps and solid waste. Both countries represent major emerging markets, their energy consumption is tremendous and the ability or opportunity to capitalize on the Disney idea to create energy from these inputs could be a game changer from a cost savings view point and help them maintain a competitive edge.

Answer #1

It is no surprise that Disney is using every opportunity to capitalise and gain efficiencies however, the measure mentioned above is sustainable and great for the environment as well.

It is to be understood that energy requirements and the conventional methods to suffice them are expensive, not environment friendly and have a great carbon footprint art the same time being non sustainable.

India and China combined make more than 1/3rd of the world population, this puts pressure on the local resources as well as a high demand for energy which is satiated by coal and conventional thermal plants, with the current rate of population growth the prices for these have significantly gone up, while, pollution being another concern with these growing demands.

The idea proposed above can be quite significant to meet the growing energy demands as well as to address the issue of depleting conventional resources like coal, gas etc. The energy produced through these sources can not replace the conventional resources but can significantly reduce the dependency on those. The food waste and solid waste generated from these regions is enormous given the size of populations, however, it is to be noted that some amount of intervention would be required for proceeding with these plans. Making the citizens aware to keep food wastes without contamination of plastics and other materials.

Another advantage with these types of energy generation is that no waste management plans would be required, waste storage and dumping would be a much smaller issue.

These technologies if implemented, would bring down the overall energy costs which would impact the manufacturers and also bring down their costs which could be translated in to lower pricing, hence, this would get edge over other producers.
