Mental Health Awareness

Mental health refers to our psychological, emotional and social well being. It is the ability to maintain even temper,emotional intelligence, socially acceptable behavior & happy disposition.

Better and positive mental health allows: a person to have the awareness of the consequences one's own behavior & its effect on others. This person will have good judgement & abilities to view setbacks of life as problems those can be solved rather than having emotional outbursts. Positive Mental Health always allows a person to set the goal which he /she can attain,rather than wrongfully influenced by others,the goal is socially acceptable too and it leads him/her to direct his/her energy smoothly towards successful attainment of this goal. A person with positive mental health has the sense of individuality ,he/she knows it well that he /she is not as same as others,their potentials and capabilities are always different,so they never try hard to act and sound like others again never isolate themselves if their opinions, judgements & potentials donot match with most of the other people as we all know all people are different & distinct individual.

if someone is living with mental health problems,Experiencing one or more of the following feelings or behaviors can be an early warning sign of a problem:

  • Having low energy.
  • Eating or sleeping too much.
  • Drawing oneself back from society, people & regular activities.
  • Feeling helpless and hopeless
  • Feeling confused, angry, agitated, forgetful.
  • Screaming & fighting for no reason
  • Having extreme mood swings.
  • Can't get out of persistent thought & memories.
  • Too much dependence on alcohol, drugs & smoking
  • Experiencing irrelevant things which are not true.
  • Thinking of harming ownself or others.

If someone is experiencing some of these issues and you they need to see a professional, get help from them.But still We still we see that half of the people have no access to mental health services because they were unaware of how to ,they just don't where to go for getting help.Mental illness cannot be treated by simple desire, help of professionals is necessary. Many times, that in many cases people may not access these services because it is difficult due to cultural or language barriers.

Mental health awareness also eliminates 'stigma' for these people with mental illnesses. If we are aware of their potentials & limitations stigma may disappear.example if someone was just diagnosed anxiety disorder, will he/she likes to be called crazy, Stigma refers to the opinions and thoughts of the community and society. We need to create a society or community where the people will have openness and can accepte those who are “different" rather than shaming them and make it negative

Awareness will also bring improvements for the mentally ill. As there is more demand from the public, it can produce a flow of attention.It can lead to improvements on policy, research, and services.If we raise more awareness, the demands also increase and can result in more funding for needs.

In addition, there is a great misconception for the mentally ill. Many think these people are lazy or just making it up. There is also the attitude that these people are either crazy, their irrational ,emotionally overwhelmed behavior is the result of possession of demons,so they r violent, out of control and unsafe.These most negative labels are attached to them due to the lack of awareness.

Mental health awareness should not only be for a day or two or even a month. We must be informed about it because it can easily happen to someone close to us. Community awareness for mental health reduces stigma. Mental health awareness increases the chances for early intervention, which can result in a fast recovery. Awareness reduces negative attitured towards the people with a metal illness.

By raising awareness, mental health can now be seen as important as physical illness. These illnesses can be well managed by Professionals or Expertise.

Awareness is kind of educating others,one's community or society. This education can bring positive effect in our community. Awareness is key for understanding what mental health is and how families & support systems of menatally ill person can receive the help they need. Public knowledge is important in accessing community resources.  

Awareness does not just end here. Attend health fairs, resource fairs, read more, listen to it. We should open up more about sharing our problems & asking others to share their problems too. We shouldnot be shameful or fearful to talk about our issues.

Helping others, connencting with others, being active, sharing and receiving will develop our coping skills to confront stress and problems and lead us to stay positive to maintain sound mental health.
