Explain 3 situations/conditions under which synchronous broods are more adaptive than asynchronous broods ( chicks that hatch one at a time). Synchronous broods are broods in which all the chicks hatch at nearly the same time.

1) Nestling mortality was generally higher for asynchronous broods than for synchronous ones, but mean nestling weight at fledging of the asynchronous broods was higher.

2) Synchronous hatching was advantageous when the survival of juveniles didn't depend on fledgeling weight. Synchronous hatching may also be selected for when breeding conditions are unfavorable but are not so bad complete breeding failure occurs.

3) Breeding performance was related to initial clutch size. Birds laying few (5-6) eggs had a lower hatching and fledging success than those laying many (7-8) eggs.
