Sodium absorbed in duodenum is mostly in association with glucose and amino acids and by sodium and h+ pump. While in PCT sodium absorbed is by simple diffusion as PCT has high conc of Na and blood has low so Na is transferred. As Na is absorbed in both the areas but in duodenum sodium absorbed is less compared to sodium absorbed in PCT. In PCT it is fast and continously transported to where it is needed and also stored in some cells for short time. High level of sodium in blood is known as hypernatremia. It involves dehydration, diarrhea, kidney dysfunction. It can be relieved by IV infusion.
