Causes were:
Mutual Defense Alliances- Countries around the world have always made agreements with their neighbors on mutual defense, treaties that might drag them into war. Such treaties meant the allies were obliged to protect them when one nation was struck. Russia was active in defending Serbia as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. In spite of the mobilization of Russia, Germany declared war on Russia. France against Germany and Austria-Hungary was then pulled in. Through marching through Belgium, Germany invaded France and dragged Britain into battle. Japan then entered the war. Earlier, on the side of the allies, Italy and the United States will join.
Imperialism- Imperialism is when a nation expands its power and wealth by taking control of additional territories. Before the First World War, many European countries in Africa and parts of Asia had made conflicting territorial arguments, making them points of contention. Tensions ran high around which nation had the right to exploit these areas because of the raw materials that these areas could provide. The that rivalry and desire for greater empires led to a rise in war that helped push the world into the First World War.
Nationalism- Much of the root of the war was based on the desire of the Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be part of Serbia instead of being part of Austria-Hungary. This particular rebellion, primarily nationalistic and religious, led directly to Archduke Ferdinand's assassination. But more broadly, nationalism has led not only to the end, but to the expansion of the war across Europe and to Asia in many of the countries across Europe. The war became more complicated and prolonged as each nation tried to prove its superiority and strength.
Consequences were:
The First World War cost a lot of money to the participating countries. Germany and Britain spent about 60% of the money generated by their economies. Countries had to increase their citizens ' taxes and borrow money. We even printed money to buy guns and other war-related things that we wanted. This led to post-war inflation.
The whole of Europe's economy failed. Companies were forced to
close when men left their employment in the army to fight. There
were no jobs left for them when they returned. Many companies
specialized in arms manufacturing. They had nothing to offer after
the war. During the war, more than before, governments dominated
the economy.
The United States entered very late into the war. The way European
countries have done, it has not undergone damage. Although they
played a lesser part in the war, America was stronger financially
than the others.
