Question

Chemical equilibrium

Nitrogen Dioxide Dimerizes according th the following reaction

2NO2(g) = N2O4(g)Kp= 6.7 a 298 k

A 2.25 L container contains 0.055 mol of NO2 and 0.082 mol N2O4 at 298k

Is the reaction at equilibrium? If not, in what direction will the reaction proceed?

Answer #1
ok so we know ppN2O4/( ppNO2)^2 = Q

pv=nrt tells us that there are p2.25 = (.055 + .082)( .0821)(298) so p = 1.49. Now our mole fraction * 1.49 = ppgas,

PPNO2=.598
PPN2O4 = .892

so .892/(.598^2) = 2.5

So Q = 2.5

Our K = 6.7, since Q<K we know that the reaction will still be proceeding, so it will shift towards the products
