Answer #1
Quantity of pens Total utility from pens Marginal utility Quantity of pencils Total utility from pencils

Marginal

utility

0 0 - 0 0 -
1 90 90 1 70 70
2 155 65 2 120 50
3 200 45 3 150 30
4 225 25 4 165 15
5 240 15 5 174 9
6 246 6 6 176 2

The marginal utility of 1st unit of pen is greater than the first unit of pencil, so a pen will be bought now

The marginal utility of 1st unit of pencil is greater than the second  unit of pen,so a pencil will be bought now

The marginal utility of 2nd unit of pen is greater than the 2nd unit of pencil, so a pen will be bought now

The marginal utility of 2nd unit of pencil is greater than the 3rd unit of pen, so a pencil will be bought now

The marginal utility of 3rd unit of pen is greater than the 3rd unit of pencil, so a pen will be bought now

The marginal utility of 3rd unit of pencil is greater than the 4th unit of pen, so a pencil will be bought now

The marginal utility of 4th unit of pen is greater than the 4th unit of pencil, so a pen will be bought now

The marginal utility of the 5th unit of pen is equal to the marginal utility of the 4th unit of the pencil, so a pen and a pencil will be bought now.

We can see that with a total of 9 units of pens and pencils altogether, our budget of $2.25 is exhausted and we cannot buy anything more. So in order to maximise utility 5 units of pens and 4 units of pencils are bought. So option B is the correct answer.
