Chapter 5, Section 5.4, Question 032 Your answer is partially correct. Try again. Height velocity graphs are used by endocrinologists to follow the progress of children with growth deficiencies. The figure below shows the height velocity curves of an average boy and an average girl between ages 3 and 18. y (cm/yr) 10 r (years) 2 46 8 10 12 14 16 18

Answer #1

b) The Question is how much does the average boy grows between the ages 3 to 10, so that will be the average growth in cm

According to the graph,

The distance curve (right y -axis) indicates the years. The velocity curve (left y axis) indicates the rate of growth at a given age.

The rate of growth at the age of 3 is 8 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 4 is 7cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 5 is 7.5 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 6 is 6.2 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 7 is 6 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 8 is 5.7 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 9 is 5.2 cm/yr

The rate of growth at the age of 10 is 5 cm/yr

The average boy grow between the age 3 to 10 is (8 + 7 + 7.5 + 6.2 + 6 + 5.7 + 5.2 + 5)

50.6 cm or 51 cm

c) for boys at the age of 12 to 15

growth is (Similarly calculate as the above answer) = (5.6 + 8 + 8 + 5) = 26.6 = 27 cm

for girls at the age of 10 to 12.5

growth is = (6 + 7.5 + 7 + 6) = 26.5 = 27 cm

d) difference in the height of boys and girls from the age of 7 (its same till 7)

Height of man - height of girl = (-0.2-0.5-1-2.2-1+3.5+6+4.2+1.8+1) = 11.6 cm

12cm
