Topic chosen: Use of biodegradable cups, cutlery and straws.

Rationale: With the increase in home-delivery options and take-away options, the amount of plastic used as packing materials has rampantly increased. Plastic cups, spoons, tumblers, straws and covers are few of many things made of plastic that are dumped everyday as waste. Most of this plastic is one time use type, and instead of being sent for recycling, are being dumped in waste. Plastics, as known, are not biodegradable; they take millions of years to degrade. These, thus, pollute the environment, and now the amount of plastic waste is doubling per year.

What can be done: The use of natural/plant based materials- like using bamboo sticks for straws, wooden spoons and forks, cloth cover (or carrying your own cover everytime you buy some grocery or a take-away) and corn-starch based bowls, which are environment friendly and decompose quickly. Also, these do no result in deforestation as (i) bamboo is a grass that grows quickly, (ii) the wooden spoons and forks could made from barks of small shrubs that grow quickly and (iii) corn-starch is a waste product.
