For successful marketing, a marketer should be able to link the product or service with the prospective customers. The individual purchases based on his/her needs. They are basically classified in the order: physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem and self-actualization needs. The first being first to be fulfilled and then the next. Hence for an individual the physological needs have to be fulfilled first and then safety needs, later belongingness and so on.

Hence, the promotional activities related to food items can be generalized to common people. They cater to the physiological needs of us humans. While a company marketing for insurance schemes, have to be able to convince customers on basis of safety cover their schemes provide to them and their families. Thus satisfying safety need.

When technological companies launch and promote their products, they ensure that the product they promote is suitable for the customer base of that particular area. Such as people who are at the 1st or 2nd stage of needs theory, will require appliances which suffice their basic needs. Hence they would say purchase a smal or medium sized refrigerator for optimum usage. But, in comparision to them, the customers who are at the 4th or 5th stage of needs, will purchase refrigirators of advanced and high-end technology. Hence while studying the market for the product, all the marketing managers need to study the requirement and cater accordingly.

Let us take an example of service. Spa services of posh salons are in great demands in areas of niche customers . But, for a common person, a basic type of salon will suffice their requirements. Thereby we observe that the Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory helps a marketer to devise proper marketing strategies and provide products and services as per the customer base needs.
