Answer #1

Functions

Alpha1

Mating type proteins are sequence specific DNA-binding proteins that act as master switches in yeast differentiation by controlling gene expression in a cell type-specific fashion. Transcriptional coactivator that, in alpha-cells, binds cooperatively with MCM1 and STE12 to a DNA sequence termed the QP' element, to activate the transcription of alpha-specific genes.

Alpha 2

Transcriptional corepressor that binds cooperatively with MCM1 to a 31-basepair DNA sequence termed the a-specific gene (asg) operator, to repress the transcription of a-cell-specific genes. Additionally, in a/alpha diploid cells, binds cooperatively with the A1 protein to a 21-basepair DNA sequence termed the haploid-specific gene (hsg) operator, to repress transcription of haploid-specific genes and MAT alpha1

When activated in yeast cells, the MAP kinase kinase kinase, Ste11, can function to regulate mating, to respond to an increase in extracellular molarity, or respond to a condition of nitrogen starvation. Under conditions of high extracellular molarity, how does a yeast cell trigger activation of osmoresponsive genes, but not genes that are nitogen-responsive or mating partner-responsive?

Question 10-12 10. During the mating process, yeast cells respond to pheromones secreted by other yeast cells. These pheromones bind GPCRs on the surface of the responding cell and lead to the activation of proteins inside the cell. When a wild-type yeast cell senses the pheromone, its physiology changes in preparation for mating: the cell stops growing until it finds a mating partner. If yeast cells do not undergo the appropriate response after sensing a pheromone, they are considered sterile....

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
