Compare and contrast electron transport and ATP synthesis in mitochondria and chloroplasts. Start with the electron donor and end with the final electron acceptor. Detail the arrangement in the membrane and redox chemistry of the electron transporters, orientation and function of ATP synthase, membrane properties, etc., etc. How are these electron transport systems related to metabolic processes occurring in the mitochondria and chloroplasts?

Answer #1

Solution:-

There is a similarity of electronic transport in chloroplast and mitochondria.

In the above two electron flow is coupled to proton translocation , creating a transmembrane proton motive force . The energy in the proton motive force is then used for the synthesis of ATP by ATP synthase .

Chloroplasts carry out noncyclic electron flow , oxidising water and reducing NADP+ . Protons are produced by the oxidation of water and reducing NADP+ . Protons are produced by the oxidation of water and by the oxidation of PQH2 ( Q ) by cytochrome b6f complex .

Mitochondria oxidize NADP to NAD+ and reduce oxygen to water . Protons are pumped by the enzyme NADP dehydrogenase , the cytochrome bc1 complex , and cytochrome oxidase . The ATP synthesis in the two systems are very similar in structure.

The ATP synthesised by a large enzyme complex known as ATP synthase . This enzyme consists of two parts, a hydrophobic membrane that bound portion called CFo , and a portion that sticks out into the stroma called CF1 , this portion synthesis the ATP .
