Question#1140Marksl The shaft shown in the figure is rotating at 650 rpm and it receives 5592.75 W through a flexible coupling at its right end. The power is delivered to an adjacent shaft through a single helical gear B having a normal pressure angle of 20° and a helix angle of 15o. The pitch diameter for the gear is 105.1814 mm (4.141 in). A spacer is used to position the gear relative to bearing C. The thrust load is taken at bearing A. Neglect the weight of the elements on the shaft. Use AISI 1020 CD steel (Sy 352 MPa, Su-421 MPa, Sa-151.7 MPa) (1) Compute the torque delivered by the shaft to the gear. (2 marks) (2) Draw the torque diagram for the shaft. (2 marks) (3) Compute the forces exerted on the shaft by the gear. (6 marks) (4) Compute the reactions at the bearings in the horizontal and vertical planes (4 marks) (5) Draw the normal force diagram for the shaft (2 marks) (6) Draw the shearing force diagrams for the shaft in both planes (4 marks) (7) Draw the bending moment diagrams for the shaft in both planes. (6) (8) Compute the resultant bending moment at the critical cross section (4) (9) Select the necessary factors and use the mechanical properties of the shaft material to determine the modified endurance strength of the shaft. (2 marks) 4 (10) Select the proper criterion of failure, the design factor and the stress concentration factor and then determine the minimum acceptable diameter of the shaft at the most critical cross section. (8 marks) Question #2120 Marks! For the shaft of question 1: 1. Write the proper failure criteria at the two end sections of the shaft. (4 marks) 2. Give a suggested diameters for other sections of the shaft (4 marks) 3. Construct a detailed schematic drawing (to scale in a separate sheet) for the shaft only showing all dimensions, different fillets radii and means of mounting of each element on the shaft. (6 marks) 6 4. Suggest alternative design for the shaft section between the two bearings if it is required to conduct the same function under the same conditions. Show your modifications using a neat free hand sketch for the shaft (6 marks).

Figure below shows the load components acting on a helical gear mounted on a simply supported shaft. Bearing B takes thrust. A flexible coupling for transmitting torque attaches to the right end of the shaft. The left end is free. 1-Draw load, shear force, and bending moment diagrams for the shaft, in both the horizontal and vertical planes. 2- Identify the most critically loaded shaft cross section, and for this location determine the diameter theoretically required for infinite life.
