You have just received a large cut from a kitchen knife. Over the following week, you observe this cut healing and note that the cut appears to heal from the edges toward the middle. Why do you think this is? Why doesn’t the cut heal from the middle toward the edge or from both directions at once?

Answer #1

The cut heals from the edges to the middle as the platelets which release the fibrin proteins are released from within the body and start forming the clot by tangling together and working their way from within to outside.

Even the growth factors released by fibroblasts and macrophages, which help during the proliferation and repair phase act from within the body going outwards gradually.

The cut doesn't start healing from the middle as the middle part doesn't have direct access to the fibrin proteins or the growth factors.
