The formation of heme occurs from protoporphyrin IX which islater incorporated into hemoglobin and cytochromes.

The precursors are glycine and succinylcholine coA. Decarboxylation of glycine followed by condensation with Succinyl-CoA is catalyzed by aminolevulinic acid synthase. The methyl group comes from the C2 of the glycine.
