Here are the three different types of firewalls that are available in the market:

• Packet filtering firewalls: This firewall is generally set inside an infrastructure and generally helps in filtering the packets as per a specified criteria, it is more like comparing the packets with the given criteria. If matched it will allow otherwise it will deny the packets.
• Stateful inspection firewall: This firewall helps in giving warning and make the device aware of cyber threats. This firewall is not responsible for examining the packet and also checks whether the packet is a part of TCP or not.
• Application level gateway: This is technically a proxy firewall, that has some similarities with the packet filtering firewall. This firewall is more like responsible for filtering packets based on the criteria specified by ports such as HTTP request string.

The circuit level firewall or the hardware firewall can be reside on a server.
