Hypovolemic Shock (Compensatory Stage):
1. Compensatory stage of shock in which body maintains cardiac output, despite loss of blood volume (decrease in stroke volume)
2. Decrease in SV precipitates increase in HR
3. Signs include narrowing PP, due to increased diastolic pressure a. Vascular tone constricts to shunt blood to vital organs, results in increased diastolic pressure
4. Key symptom of shock is increase in thirst, due to RAAS activation.
a. Fun fact: Don’t give water to people in shock; if surgery is needed to stop internal bleeding, water ingestion may cause complications!
Why?
