body features you would like to observe and record among insects. a data table listing the 11 insects and the 4-5 features. Include a title and 3. Think of 4-5 Construct labels Monarch butterfly Magicicada Short homed beetle Honeybee Cricket Dragonfly Scorpion Earwig Diving beetle Dobsonfly Mayfly Procedure: Make in depth comparisons among the 11 insect types. Use your data table to keep a record of what you observed. Spend at least 20 min. on this task. The more specific your observations, the easier the post lab will be Post lab: 1. Which insect would you consider to be the simplest? Why? State evidence. 2. Which insect would you consider to be the most complex? Why? State evidence. 3. What 2 insects appear to be the most closely related? State 2 reasons for your conclusion. 4. What 2 insects appear to be the least closely related? State 2 reasons for your conclusion. 5. Construct a proposed evolutionary tree of all of the insects you studied today. Your observations are the evidence for this tree. Remember where the simplest insects should appear on the tree. Be neat! Your tree will likely be different from other trees in the class - this is expected. 6. Describe how your tree provides evidence for the unity and diversity of life 7. Describe how your tree illustrates emerging properties in living things. 8. Describe how the idea of form fits function applies to insect morphology.

Answer #1
Body part 1 Body part 2 Body part 3 Body part 4
1 Honeybee stinger - used to sting in both males and females legs - Thorax consists of legs to control the movement of the body eyes and antenna - Head of the honey bee consists of the eyes and antennae. The eyes consists of the compound eye and the simple eye: the compound eye helps them to understand color, light and directional information from the sun’s UV rays, whereas the function of the simple eye is to determine the amount of light present. The antennas’ function is to smell and detect odors. six visible segments of abdomen - Consists of the reproductive organs in female and male bodies
2 Cricket At the starting of the abdomen are paired appendages called as the ovipositor in females which is cylindrical and long in nature. Legs - Powerful in nature which helps them to hop from place to place, hind legs are thicker as compared to fore legs eyes and antenna -  Head consists of a long slender antennae arising from first segments. Also just behind are two compound eyes. On the forehead, three ocelli (simple eyes) are present Abdomen consists of a series of holes known as spiracles through which crickets breathe
3 Dragonfly Stinger - They contain "folk names" that show that they do have stingers (such as Horse stinger), but they don't use their egg-laying tube (ovipositor) for stinging. Dragonfly has six legs but it relies completely on flight for its movement. It does not use legs to walk but only to anchor to foliage during resting period Dragonfly consists of two large compound eyes that take up most of its head. It also consists of short antennas. Dragonflies breath through a series of holes called as spiracles that are located on their abdomen.
4 Scorpion Scorpions are predators in nature. It consists of a narrow, segmented tail, that is curved to the forward, ending with a venomous stinger. They consist of eight legs and have a pair of grasping pedipalps It has two eyes on the top of the cephalothorax, and two to five pairs of eyes along the front corners of the cephalothorax. It consists of the abdomen known as opisthosoma
5 Earwig Earwig consists of pincers which are used for their defense and if picked up and agitated, the earwig use their forceps. These pincers or forceps are protruding out of the abdomen. Legs present are thin and adapted for running. It consist of  two small eyes, two long, thin antennae, and mouthparts for chewing. The compound eyes are made of hundreds of individual photoreceptors that helps in transmitting signals from neurons to brains. Earwigs consist of a pair of forceps-like pincers on their abdomen, and membranous wings folded underneath short, rarely used fore wings.
6 Diving beetle The first two pairs of legs of the male have a large number of suction cups, which enables them to gain a secure grip while mating, and on their prey. It consists of three pairs of legs followed by thick fringe of swimming hairs They have 4 compound eyes. 2 of them are big and shiny on the head which are further divided into half and makes it appear as though they have 4 eyes. It consist of abdominal appendages that act as gills for respiration.
