Celia disease result in damage to small intestine and can possibly increase risk for hypoglycemia ,as the small intestine may no longer be able to absorb nutrients such as sugars properly .Celiac disease is treated with lifelong avoidance of dietary gluten .Wheat,barley,oats,and rye products must be avoided.Although pure oats do not contain gluten ,oat products can become contaminated with wheat ,rye and barley during the milling process.Gluten is also found in many food additives,preservatives and stabilizers.A combination of corticosteroids and a gluten-free diet is used to treat individuals with refractory celiac disease who do not respond to the gluten-free diet alone.Maintenance of a gluten-free diet is difficult,particularly when travelling or eating in restaurants .The patients need to know where to purchase gluten-free products .Patients may need referral for financial assistance ,because gluten-free products are more expensive than regular foods.Gluten-free products are sold in health food stores and are available through various internet sites.Patients need to know that the intestinal damage will recur unless they adhere to the diet and that chronic inflammations can lead to complications such as lymphoma.
