Answer #1

IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

It reffers to a group of symptoms like pain or discomfort in abdomen and a change in bowel movements.

Diet Advice

  • Small and Frequent meals, larger meals may cause cramps and diarrhoe
  • eat food low in fat and high in carbohydrates Eg: Pasta, rice, whole grain bread, cereals, fruits and vegetables.
  • include fibre content foods which may improve the constipation problem.
  • Avoid foods like high fatty food, some milk products, alcohol and caffeine, artificial sweetners, and gas forming foods.
  • Follow low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) which is a group of short chain carbohydrates.

As there is no known permanent cure for IBS, it is advised to control the symptoms with diet modification, life style changes and medicines to relieve the symptoms.

Diet control in these patients may lead to potentiel nutrional imbalance due to diet restrictions, other than that it can affect the quality of life with increased stress and anxiety.
