Consider olfaction - what is population coding, and what does it allow us to do?
Population coding is a process that is used to represent stimuli by using the joint activities of a number of neurons. In this process, individual neuron has a particular pattern of responses over several set of inputs, and all the responses of many neurons may be summed up to detect some value about the inputs. So from the theoretical perspective, population coding is one of a few mathematically well-furnished problems in neuroscience which deals with the pivotal characteristics of neural coding and yet is simple enough for theoretic analysis.
The coding paradigm of population coding allows itself to be used as a sensor and motor areas of the brain
