Common respiratory problem during childhood is asthma. Asthma causes wheezing in children. Wheeze is due to narrowing of airways. When the air enters the narrowed passage of airway, it causes wheezing, musical sound of breath. Asthma is the chronic inflammatory response of airways. Children who are having recurrent respiratory tract viral infection, more prone to develop asthma.

The risk factors of asthma are the children who are having allergic atopic dermatitis such as eczema , allergic rhinitis such as hay fever, the major risk factor of asthma is asthma induced by allergic substances like airborne particles like pollen grains, dust, hairs shed from pets, insecticides like cockroach sprays, mold spores,, dried saliva from pets etc . The other risk factors are irritants or pollutants in the occupational area. The people who are exposed to occupational irritants such as chemicals, fumes, gases and dust etc . When people exposed to extreme cold and hot weather, they are also at risk to develop asthma . This type of asthma is called exercise induced asthma. The other common asthma triggers are heavy cigarette smoking, stress and strong emotions,, physical activity,, allergic to food and food preservatives, people who are having recurrent acid reflex or heart burn, some medications such as aspirin and beta blockers.

Morbidity of asthma : Each and every year, around one quarter of patients occupying emergency unit affected by asthma . Each year more than 10 million out patient department visits due to asthma and hospitalized kids due to asthma are more than 500,000. Asthma is the third leading cause for hospitalization . Among the hospitalized patients, half of them are children. Most of the time, abscentism in school is due to asthma attack of children .

Mortality of asthma : Each year nearly 4000 death due to asthma attack. But it is preventable with proper treatment. Since 1980s the death rate below 19 years of age group is remarkedly high. 65% of women are died due to asthmatic attack.
