Context: One of the longest and largest breeds of domesticated cats in the world is the Maine Coon.  A histogram of the weight of the cats of this breed reportedly approximately resembles a routine bell curve, and is distributed accordingly. The population standard deviation for the weight of this breed is approximately 2.5 pounds, according to one interpretation of veterinary statistics. Animal scientist and amateur statistician Angel Solstice collected an SRS of 64 Maine Coon cats and found their sample mean weight to be 20.425 pounds. If she wants to be 80% confident in her prediction of the true mean weight for all the cats of this breed, can she reasonably estimate the average weight for a Maine Coon at 20 pounds?

a)  What is the corresponding software output using the CONFIDENCE function in Excel, expressed and rounded to six decimal places?

b) What is the lower bound for the 80% confidence interval about the population mean, rounded to four decimal places?

c) What is the upper bound for the 80% confidence interval about the population mean, rounded to four decimal places?

d) Based on these statistics, is a hypothesized value of 20 pounds a reasonable estimation of the population mean weight of these Maine Coon cats?

  1. YES, highly reasonable as an estimate
  2. YES, reasonable as an estimate
  3. YES, marginally reasonable as an estimate
  4. NO, marginally unreasonable as an estimate
  5. NO, unreasonable as an estimate
  6. NO, highly unreasonable as an estimate

Answer #1

x̅ = 20.425, σ = 2.5, n = 64

a) Using function in excel:

=CONFIDENCE.NORM(0.2, 2.5, 64) = 0.400485

b) Lower Bound = x̅ - E = 20.425 - 0.400485 = 20.0245

c) Upper Bound = x̅ + E = 20.425 + 0.400485 = 20.8255

d) NO, unreasonable as an estimate

Scientists want to estimate the mean weight of mice after they have been fed a special diet. From previous studies, it is known that the weight is normally distributed with standard deviation 5 grams. How many mice must be weighed so that a 95% confidence interval will have margin of error of 0.6 grams? Write only an integer as your answer. 1/The effectiveness of a blood-pressure drug is being investigated. An experimenter finds that, on average, the reduction in systolic blood pressure is 56.7 for a sample of size 664 and standard deviation 11.2. Estimate how much the drug will lower a typical patient's systolic blood pressure (using a 95% confidence level). Enter your answer as a tri-linear inequality accurate to one decimal place (because the sample statistics are reported accurate to one decimal place). ( 65.6742 ) < μμ <(68.3258...

A machine that is programmed to package 5.60 pounds of cereal is being tested for its accuracy. In a sample of 100 cereal boxes, the sample mean filling weight is calculated as 5.69 pounds. The population standard deviation is known to be 0.09 pound. [You may find it useful to reference the z table.] a-1. Identify the relevant parameter of interest for these quantitative data. The parameter of interest is the proportion filling weight of all cereal packages. The parameter...

A new idea for treating advanced melanoma, the most serious kind of skin cancer: Genetically engineer white blood cells to better recognize and destroy cancer cells, and then infuse these cells into patients. The subjects in a small initial study of this treatment were 1111 patients whose melanoma had not responded to existing treatments. One question was how rapidly the new cells would multiply after infusion, as measured by the doubling time (in days). The doubling times are provided: 1.41.4...
