Topic - The role of Dietary lipids in heart disease

1.First question - What are lipids ? What are there different types?

Answer - Lipid is a complex molecule composed of carbon ,hydrogen, and oxygen .It is used as a synonym for fats . It is insoluble in water but soluble in oraganic solvents.

Lipids are classified as:-

- Fatty acid (saturated and unsaturated)

- Glycerides (neutral and phosphoglycerides)

- Non Glyceride ( waxes ,steroids)

- complex lipids (lipoprotein)

2. Second question - What are the functions of lipid?

They are the main energy source of the body

They have regulatory functions

They play a major role in hemostasis

Form a phospholipid bilayer

3. Third question - How does dietary lipids cause heart disease?

Taking dietary lipids in your diet does not makes you prone to heart disease . It depends upon the amount and type of fat you are consuming. Having saturated fat in high amounts (bad cholesterol) like butter ,cheese ,red meat , animal based fats etc causes heart disease because it gets clogged up in the blood vessels of the heart and results in partial or complete occlusion which decreases blood supply to heart , ending up in heart failure and arrest.

Having unsaturated fats(good fat) in the dietlike olive oil ,avocado oil , vegetable oil etc is good for the health as it replaces saturated fats and lowers blood cholesterol .

4. Fourth question - How much is the recommended fatty acid per day ?

Saturated fat - 13gm / day for a person who need 2000kcal a day and if you had a high risk of heart disease then 200mg /day

Unsaturated fat - for a personal who need 2000kcal a day 44 to 77gm of unsaturated fat is recommended.

5 . Fifth question - How can we prevent heart disease?

Heart disease is not only caused by having huge amount of lipids . It include many factors like sedentary lifestyle ,eating junk foods/ fast foods , uncontrolled blood pressure ,stress etc. The prevention methods are:-

- Doing regular exercise

- Having a healthy diet which is highly composed of fruits and vegetables and less fats (saturated fats like triglycerides )

- stress reduction

- cessation of smoking

- cessation of drinking alcohol

- control of blood pressure

- stay at a healthy weight
