Answer #1
Concepts and reason

An alkene reacts with ozone to form an ozonide, an intermediate. The ozonide decomposes into products either by oxidative work-up or reductive work-up. The type of work-up decides the final product in the ozonolysis.

Fundamentals

Carbon-carbon double bond is broken into two carbon-oxygen double bond in ozonolysis.

A reducing agent (Zn or DMS) is added in reductive work-up, the reducing agent decomposes the ozonide.

The given alkene is but-1-ene.

but-1-ene

Ozonolysis of but-1-ene is as follows:

but-1-ene
3-ethyl-1,2,4-trioxolane

Reductive work-up with dimethyl sulphide is as follows:

ON
010
|
+
H
C
-H
(CH3)S
formaldehyde
propionaldehyde
3-ethyl-1,2,4-trioxolane

The products are ‘propionaldehyde’ and ‘formaldehyde’.

Ans:

The products in the ozonolysis of the given alkene with reductive work-up are as follows:

=
0
O=
propionaldehyde
formaldehyde
