any water in the organic solvent can be removed by using drying agent. CaCl2 or MgSO4 has the property of drying .so when calcium chloride is added to dichloromethane,it helps in removing the extra water that might be present in the organic layer by absorbing the water molecules on its surface,thus making the organic layer water free.so the purpose is to use as a drying agent
