Pendulum A is a physical pendulum made from a thin, rigid, and uniform rod whose length is d. One end of this rod is attached to the ceiling by a frictionless hinge, so the rod is free to swing back and forth. Pendulum B is a simple pendulum whose length is also d. Obtain the ratio TA/TB of their periods for small-angle oscillations.

Answer #1
Period TA = 2 (pi)v [ I / mgL ]

Where I = moment of inertia = ( 1/ 3) md^ 2

L = d / 2 Since the rod is uniform

So, TA = 2(pi) v[ 2md^ 2 / ( 3mgd) ]

= 2(pi) v[ 2d / 3g ]

Period TB = 2(pi) v[ d / g ]

TA / TB = v[ 2/3] = 0.8164

Answer #2
Period TA = 2 (?)? [ I / mgL ]
I = moment of inertia = ( 1/ 3) md^ 2
L = d / 2 (since the rod is uniform)
TA = 2(?) ?[ 2md^ 2 / ( 3mgd) ]
= 2(?) ?[ 2d / 3g ]
Period TB = 2(?) ?[ d / g ]
TA / TB = ?[ 2/3] = 0.8164

    A uniform thin rod of length L = 40.0 cm and mass M = 800 g is pinned so that it can swing about a point that is one-third of the way from one end of the rod. You pull the rod away from equilibrium by a small angle and release it, so that the rod swings back and forth. (a) What is the period of the rod’s motion as it swings back and forth? (b) What is the length...

    A uniform thin rod of mass m and length 5b is suspended from the ceiling by a single string of length 2b attached to one end (this end of the rod is called P1). Thus in equilibrium the string and rod hang straight down and the lower end of the rod is a distance 7b from the ceiling (this end of the rod is called P2). The motion is constrained to be in a fixed vertical plane, so we have...

    Find the periods of two physical pendulums consisting of identical thin rigid rods of length L = 138 cm. The first rod is pivoted about it's upper end, while the second rod is pivoted at a small hole drilled through the rod at a distance d = 103 cm from it's lower end, see the picture below. Note that the mass of the rod is not important — it cancels out. If it helps, take m = 1 kg. The...
