Answer #1

Answer 5.

Actually 100 percent ethanol means it contains only C2H5OH molecule. However it is usually not available because of two reasons

  1. Its preparation is very difficult as the pure ethanol is very active towards water and absorbs it readily.
  2. Ethanol being psychoaddictive is not allowed to distribute in consumable form . There is always addition of other solvents to make it non consumable. The process is denaturation.

Now, the alcohols are graded i.e 95 % on the basis of their water content as follows.

  1. Absolute alcohol: The alcohol containing water less than one percent is absolute alcohol. This is usually 99.89 percent pure or less. So, if 100 percent pure alcohol is available which is also called absolute alcohol. It is absolutely more expensive.
  2. Rectified alcohol(sprit) : The azeotropic mixture of 96 percent alcohol and 4 percent water is called rectified sprit. This is less expensive.
