Barium enema is a type of enema given through rectum to diagnose any colon abnormalities. About barium enema, health care providers should educate the patient before the procedure. It will help the patient to understand the procedure and help the patient to co-operate throughout the procedure.

During administration of barium enema, patient will have the feeling of abdominal fullness, urge to defecate and abdominal cramping. Health care providers provide psychological support to control the urge to defecate. Encourage the patient to take deep breath and hold, it helps to take x ray of colon from various angles. Until the procedure completes, encourage the patient to control the urge to defecate.

After the procedure, the patient can defecate and return to his normal diet pattern. Encourage the patient to take more amount of fluids, to eliminate barium from the colon. Inform the patient that , he will have white stools for 2 to 3 days after the procedure.
