Dibenzalacetone ( C17H14O) mass spectrum :

  • m/z : 235 is (M+1) peak due to 13C, its intensity is 17*1.1 = ~19 % of parent peak.
  • m/z : 234 is (M+.) peak is parent peak, its relative intensity is 100 % : it is base peak due to molecular ion.
  • m/z : 233 is (M-1) peak due to loss of H. from molecular ion its relative intensity may be half of parent peak.
  • m/z :157 is (M-77) peak due to loss of benzene radical ; its relative intensity will be very less due to instability and further fragmentation.
  • m/z :131 is (M-103) peak due to loss of acetylene from m/z:157 ; its relative intensity will be ~40 % , is quite stable due to stability of +ve charge by oxygen; it may give  further fragmentation. This fragmentation shows the presence of m/e ion 131 which shows the release benzaldehyde ion.
  • m/z :103 is (M-131) peak : this fragmentation of m/e 103 shows the release of carbonyl ion , its relative intensity will be higher ~60% , due to resonance stability .
  • m/z :77 is (M-157) peak (~50% intensity ) and m/z :51 is (M-183) peak (~33 % intensity): these fragmentation show the presence of benzene ions and futher fragmentation.
  • m/z : 115 ; very less intense peak, probably coupling of carbonyl and benzene cation radical.
