You have a 15-year-old teen mom who self-presented to your primary care clinic with her 18-month-old baby girl. You have seen the mom several times in your clinic for various health issues. This is the first time you are treating her baby. You ran into her in the hallway. She reports that she is worried about her baby because she is not drinking her formula. She was holding her smiling and somewhat energetic baby. You noted that the baby has rhinorrhea, but otherwise appears healthy. Before you can see her, your nurse manager (NM) reports to you that her mother had reported her as a runaway. Her mother is now on the way to the clinic. Your NM also informs you that he had called the police.
What would you do in this situation? Select a specific ethical principle or principles from this week’s readings, and explain how it applies to this case study to support your decision. Generalized and layperson’s terms of ethics will not be accepted.

In this scenario the nurse should respect the teen mom's feelings about her baby of being unwell .Her approach towards the teen Mom should not change with the fact that she is a runaway ,and the nurse manager calling the police .it is the nurse duty to give primary care to the teen mom's baby considering the ethics of Justice as the teen Mom and the baby has equal rights to receive medical care .
Once primary care is given the nurse should assertively speak to the teen Mom and understand the background by using the ethics of fidelity that is maintaing a trustworthiness from the teen Mom to the nurse .once the teen Mom and her baby is made comfortable.she can allow the legal proceedings to start .by doing this the nurse has given ethics of autonomy to the teen Mom in deciding what is best for her baby .
The mother of the teen Mom should be counseled in. Accepting the teen Mom .try and understand why the teenage mom is a runaway .what are the difficulties she is facing at her home and we can give her options of second choice homes which gives good housing and protection to the teen Mom and baby.the nurse should act as an advocate to the teen Mom in deciding the best for her by fulfilling the ethics of beneficence and nonmalificence
