The word Doula is a greek word meaning womens servant

1.Doula is trained non-medical companion who supports another individual through significant health related expeience such as childbirth, miscarriage,inducded labor or non reproductive experience such as dying.

Many studies support that the experience of doula assisted labor has better outcome than mothers normal health support system.This is the reason many expected mothers approach doula service.

2.The moms anxiety can be reduced by explaining the purpose and importance of doula.

The main goal of doula is to help mother experience a positive and safe birth whether unmedicated or caesarian.

  • The main purpose of doula is to help women with a safe,memorable and empowering birthing experience.
  • Before the expectancy the doula and client built in relationship during which the mother feels free to ask questions,express her fears and concerns, and take a active role in creating a birth plan.
  • They can be appraoached even through phones.Even though they do not provide any medical care they are knowledgeable about many medical aspects of labour and delivery.
  • During delivery they are in constant and close proximity with mother by providing comfort which includes pain relief techniques like breathing techniqies, relaxation techniques,massage and laboring positions.
  • After delivery doulas will create bond between newborn and mother including family members. They also encourage mother in breastfeeding process.

3.The attitude of obstetrician to doulas with the evidence of study shows positive attitude in terms of collaborative team approach.However in personal approach there is certain varying attitude of obstetrician towards doulas
