Multiple studies conducted in the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom show that the probability of dying in the hospital is higher if you are admitted on the weekend. Why might this be? What factors might contribute to this probability? What could hospitals do to reduce/eliminate this phenomenon?

This phenomenon is called weekend effect.
Reason: fewer nurses and doctors are available in emergency care. The factor a lower treatment intensity for patients presenting at the weekend explains their higher probability of death.
Solution : The most comprehensive solution would be to introduce seven-day availability of all types of hospital services, scheduling elective procedures and outpatient appointments on weekends as well as weekdays. This would essentially mean having no difference in the type of care offered on different days of the week.
