From the chart for figure 1). We can see initial momentum in the x-direction is zero. Then, there is an impulse given in the x-direction so that the object has a final momentum.

Consider a puck resting on a frictionless surface. Now the puck is hit by a hockey stick ie an impulse is imparted to the puck. After being hit the puck has momentum equal to the impulse.
