Should the Reconstruction era be considered the Second American Revolution? By what criteria should we make such a judgement?
Yes, in my opinion Reconstruction era can be considered a "Second American Revolution". I make this judgment because Reconstruction era resulted in changed freedoms, antithetic ideals and identity of a country and a reorientation of policies by government. A revolution occurs due to a repudiation of an established societal structure or political system, often arises suddenly and with violence, which in my opinion can be exemplified clearly with both the American Revolution and the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Both these revolutions were fought on the unity's name in an effort for change and freedom in politics and society; and the Reconstruction era came with monumental changes in politics after the revolution.
