Considering the discussions on cultural competence in the Health Professionalism class and the previous class on the role of culture in healthcare, what is your perception of the importance? Why is a focus on culture so much more prevalent today than it was 20 years ago? Where do you anticipate this focus will be 20 years from now?

Cultural competence is the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures, helps to ensure the needs of all comunity members are addressed.

Cultural competence in health care refers to the ability for health care proffesionals to demonostrate cultural competence towards patient with diverse value, belifs, and feelings. it includes consideration of the indivisual, social, cuitural, and feelings needs of patients for effective cross cuitural communication with there health care providers.

the main goal of cultural competence in health care is to reduce health disparities and to provide optimal care to patients regardless of their race, gender, ethinic background, native language spoken, and religious or cultural beliefs.

In a health care setting cultural competence will allow a health care proffesional to properly asses the situation and modify indivisual behaviour in order to meet the needs of patient in other cultures "while maintaining a proffesional level of respect, objectivity, and identity" . An indivisual from different culture may approach a situation differently than you would and cultural factors may influence how he or she defines and evaluates situations, seek help for problems, present problems and information, and responds to intervention and service plan.

We have to ensure that "all people always experience the safest, highest quality, best value health care accross all setting" in order to provide this level of care, health care proffesionals need to possess cultural agility, intercultural comunication skills, and be culturally-responsive.

Various research studies have indicated that providing culturally competent care is challenging and complex. The most frequent identified challenges were: insufficient cultural knowledge, attitudes and belief about health and scikness, language barrier, lack of availability of interpreters, prejudices, and ethnocentrisim, and lack of availability of institutional support.

These factors not only impact on the values, beliefs and behaviors of clients, they underpin ideas around the provision of care and influence the expectations that clients and practitioners have of each other.
