(23 points ) Consider a pair of six-sided dice used in an experiment where the pair are thrown and the sum of the upturned faces is noted.

  1. Find the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of this function and present in a table. What is the probability X is less than 3? What is the probability X is less than or equal to 3?
  2. Find the variance of X. Show your work.
  3. Look at the formula for the variance given by Equation 2.30 on p. 98 (the original formula). What happens if we don’t square the first term (after the summation sign)? Show work.
  4. Consider the formula from part (f). What happens if we take the first term to the 4th power (instead of squaring it)? Show work on this.
  5. What use is the CDF? Can you think of situations when it would be useful to have?
